Design Trends of 2016

While we say adieu to a great year I think it is important to recognize the hottest trends in home design from 2016.

Shiplap. This trend hit hard and pretty much took down everyone and their mother, literally, you couldn’t look at one blog or home magazine that wasn’t sporting this new trend.  It can be easily installed and DIY’d to be washed out for more of a farmhouse vibe or kept bold white and crisp for a modern twist as well. Below it was beautifully used in this main living space, photo from Artisan

Claw foot and stand alone tubs. Here in Tampa we have a popular historic neighborhood called Hyde Park, where we have been lucky enough to drool over claw foot tubs for quite some time now. In 2016 it seemed the old world decor crept in the eyes of the rest of the world and thus the tub fan club began. In this picture below the claw foot tub is showcased in this bathroom that was perfectly designed by  A Well Dressed Home

Barn Doors. This was a hot trend that I happily took part in. This is my actual barn door outside of my laundry room and it is right off a barn from a farm in Tennessee. I had the wall engineered to hold the weight of the barn door and used the actual barn railing for installation to preserve the natural look. I will blog later about the details and specs of how I chose this door and the beauty of its originality. I do love this door so much and embrace that I am one of the 8 million people who now have one in their homes, for the record I did this in 2014, however the trend caught fire in 2016.   Light floors. A big trend this past year was lighter floors, while deep dark wood still pulls at my heart-strings, light washed wood flooring has turned my eye. This lighter flooring allows the room to feel more spacious and flows nicely into the lighter whites and grays that overtook our design worlds from years past. The gorgeous floor below is from the Heritage line at Dinesen.

Floral. Florals made a big splash in 2016 from fabrics to rugs and also to wallpaper as seen below. No space was left safe in this hyper active trend as anything and everything was covered in floral patterns. The floral wallpaper below is from an adorable kitchen at My Scandinavian Home.

Colored cabinets. Mix and matching your cabinets was a sought after look as many chose to off set the all white kitchen with a pop of color. Some used it in their kitchen island cabinets or chose either the upper or lower cabinets to showcase a different color to be the focal point in the kitchen. Below is an adorable kitchen owned by a blogger herself and picture credit from Papercity Mag.

While I believe these trends will hold its face value well into 2017 I am very excited to see what this next year brings to us in the design and decor world.

What are your favorites from 2016? I would love to hear from you!~
